More Cloud Computing Trends For 2018

Last time in this space, we referred to a survey recently completed by RightScale that discusses expected cloud computing trends in 2018. The survey discusses specific statistics from 997 IT respondents related to their company’s usage of, and thoughts about cloud computing and how they see their enterprise incorporating cloud computing into their everyday work.

Key takeaways from the RightScale 2018 State of the Cloud Report

• 99% of respondents use the cloud.
• 81% of enterprises with over 1,000 staff employ a multi-cloud strategy (utilizing multiple public and/or private cloud apps).
• 38% of respondents see the public cloud (such as DocBoss) as their top priority, up from 27% in 2017.
• Only 5% of these enterprises have no plans to use cloud-based apps currently.
• Enterprises using hybrid cloud strategy dropped while those utilizing multi-cloud strategy increased.
• Public cloud spending continues to increase: 20% of enterprises spend more than $6 million annually on them.

Five trends pointing to continued cloud growth

Today we refer to a recent article from TechGenix that discusses 5 specific trends that point to a continued increase in the popularity and uptake of cloud computing but also regarding expected shifts in the trends themselves.

Among other things the first specific trend discussed refers to a “clear path to the cloud” and how cloud computing is increasingly looked upon as a technology that companies can use to save money and achieve new benefits at the same time.

A Medium.com article entitled 8 Trends in Cloud Computing for 2018 makes a similar point: business and IT executives are no longer looking at the Cloud solely as a tool; the focus has shifted towards finding the right way to use it to accomplish business goals. As that article states:

At least half of IT spending will be Cloud-based in 2018, reaching 60% of all IT infrastructure, and 60–70% of all software, services, and technology spending by 2020.
